Insights into molecular grading, sustainable agriculture, and industrial application technology.
Not all stevia extracts are created equal. The raw leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant contain a complex mixture of sweet compounds called steviol glycosides. Understanding the molecular profiles of these glycosides is critical for procurement officers to secure formulations that meet both cost-efficiency and flavor expectations.
The most abundant and commercially widespread steviol glycoside. While highly cost-effective, it exhibits a distinct lingering bitter or licorice-like aftertaste at high concentrations, requiring expert taste masking or blending.
Highly valued for its superior taste profile which closely mimics sucrose with significantly less bitterness than Reb A. However, its natural abundance in stevia leaves is low, making extraction costs higher.
The gold standard of stevia sweeteners. Reb M possesses a clean, sugary profile with negligible off-notes. Innovative enzymatic transglycosylation and fermentation methods are breaking barriers to make Reb M commercially viable for high-volume production.
The global market for Stevia Extract Powder is projected to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 8.5% over the next decade. Driven by the expansion of the carbonated soft drink (CSD), dairy, and pharmaceutical industries, manufacturers are looking for reliable partners who can guarantee physical-chemical stability and multi-ton supply consistency.
Regulatory alignment is another massive driver. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), the FDA (GRAS status), and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have established rigorous safety thresholds. Top-tier suppliers must provide certificates of analysis (COAs) validating minimal pesticide residuals, heavy metals below ppb levels, and zero Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) contaminants.
When evaluating global suppliers, procurement directors must focus on key technical specifications. Below is the reference framework detailing standard requirements for premium Stevia Extract formulations:
| Active Ingredient Specification | Commercial Grading & Purity | Primary Industrial Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Steviol Glycosides (Total) | ≥ 95% (HPLC-DAD) | Base sweetening agent for low-calorie food formulations. |
| Rebaudioside A (Reb-A) | 60%, 80%, 97%, 98% | Beverages, confectionery, table-top sweeteners, dietary supplements. |
| Enzymatically Modified Stevia (Glucosyl Steviol Glycosides) | Highly customized solubility profile | Excellent taste-masking properties for pharmaceutical and functional foods. |
| Rebaudioside M & D Blends | Customized high-purity ratios | Ultra-premium sugar-free applications demanding absolute clean taste. |

Sourcing excellence starting from the soil and advanced bio-fermentation research
UniCare invests 10% of our annual net profit in research and development. In addition to optimizing and developing the existing natural plant extraction process, we have also established a professional R&D department for the natural fermentation products. By increasing investment in natural fermentation products, we try to break through the traditional processes and disrupt industry development.
UniCare has deep cooperation with Beijing University of Chemical Technology in the field of fermentation, jointly developing and transforming the new raw materials of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and natural health products into mass-produced products.
In order to control raw materials more efficiently and with higher quality, a raw material procurement system has been established, which extends procurement to every piece of planting land and can trace the raw materials of each batch of products. The storage of raw materials is operated according to the advanced quality management system process, and the content of active ingredients, moisture, ash, heavy metals, pesticide residues and other items of raw materials are strictly controlled.
At the same time, in order to further ensure the high quality of important products, UniCare cooperated with planting farmers to establish ginkgo leaf planting bases, epimedium planting bases, phellodendron planting bases, olive leaf planting bases, etc. Some of these bases are planted strictly in accordance with the GACP (Good Agricultural and Collection Practices) management model.
In addition, we cooperate with seedling research and development companies to develop high-content seedling cultivation, and cultivate better seedlings through hybridization or gene optimization, so as to continuously reduce unit costs to benefit users.
Formulation integration guidelines for diverse commercial manufacturing domains.
Stevia remains highly stable in acidic matrices and under pasteurization temperatures. Formulators combine high-purity Reb M and Reb D to replace 100% of sugar, avoiding the classic metallic aftertaste associated with older stevia grades.
In yogurt and ice cream, Stevia powder reduces calories without destabilizing the fat-emulsion structure. Often blended with erythritol or chicory root fiber to rebuild the bulk and texture lost from sucrose extraction.
Ideal for chewable tablets, chewable gummies, and protein powders. Enzymatically modified stevia masks the bitter, astringent properties of raw amino acids and plant-based proteins, improving consumer compliance.
